Holiday Eating Recovery Boost

Eating ICe Cream

Extra Eating Recovery Support

The holiday season can be meaningful and joyful, but it can also bring unique challenges for children, adolescents, and adults recovering from an eating disorder. Changes in routine, travel, family gatherings, holiday meals, social events, increased focus on food, and conversations about weight, size,  or appearance can make recovery feel more difficult.

For those in recovery, the holidays may lead to increased anxiety around food, decreased motivation, avoidance, restriction, eating disorder urges, or a return to behaviors they had worked hard to overcome. Others may simply need additional structure and support to maintain the progress they have already made.

Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively with each client, family, and existing treatment providers to:

  • Identify current barriers to eating disorder recovery during the holidays

  • Strengthen motivation and commitment to recovery

  • Improve consistency with meals and snacks

  • Prepare for holiday meals, travel, parties, and family gatherings

  • Address anxiety and eating disorder thoughts surrounding food and body image

  • Strengthen coping and emotional regulation skills

  • Practice challenging foods and real-life eating situations

  • Help parents support and respond effectively to eating disorder behaviors during the holidays

  • Establish practical recovery goals for the holidays and the new year

  • Reinforce progress and reduce the risk of relapse

  • Address perfectionism and rigidity through exposures
