CAROLINA GAVIRIA, LMHC, NCC, CEDS-C

Eating Disorder and Trauma Specialist and Consultant

As a bilingual (Spanish-English) Licensed Mental Health Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Certified Eating Disorders Specialist-Supervisor (CEDS-S), iaedp™-Approved Consultant, and EMDRIA-Certified EMDR Therapist, I bring over 20 years of experience to my work supporting children, adolescents, and adults in their journey toward healing and recovery. I am deeply committed to helping individuals overcome eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and trauma—conditions that are increasingly prevalent in today's world and often deeply intertwined.

I understand the heartache and worry that come with seeing a loved one struggle—whether it's with persistent sadness, anxiety, food restriction, bingeing and purging, or using substances to self-medicate emotional pain. These are not simply behaviors that someone can "just stop." Often, they are coping mechanisms rooted in deep emotional suffering. That’s why my approach is both compassionate and solution-focused, helping clients build practical coping strategies, reframe limiting beliefs, and develop healthier ways of managing distress and the underlying concerns associated with their struggles.

As the co-founder of Home for Balance Psychotherapy Group, LLC, and The Food & Mood Institute, I believe strongly in the possibility of full recovery and the importance of a collaborative, family-centered approach. I currently serve as president-elect of the Board of Directors for the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (iaedp™), and I'm an active contributor to community education, prevention, and advocacy efforts.

My practice integrates evidence-based treatments such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT Skills (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), and Family-Based Treatment (FBT), tailored to meet each client's individual needs. I also work closely with medical providers, registered dietitians, and schools to ensure a coordinated, holistic approach.

Sessions are offered in both English and Spanish, in person at my Coconut Creek, FL office, or online via a secure HIPAA-compliant platform. I pride myself on creating a warm, welcoming environment where clients feel safe to be themselves and explore their concerns and empowered to make meaningful change. Flexible scheduling is available to accommodate busy lives.

In addition to my clinical work, I have presented at local and national conferences on topics including the impact of trauma on eating disorders, culturally responsive care for the Latinx community, prosocial work, and the intersection of addiction and eating disorders.

When I’m not in session, I enjoy traveling, spending time in nature, watching movies, reading, and cherishing moments with my family and friends.
